The ongoing conflict between the French army and the FLN ( Algerian Nationalists independence group) kept on going, many of the Algerian civilians were afraid of what was to come in the future. A young girl during this time named Yasmine Belkacem joined the independence movement, determined for her homeland Algeria to become an independent nation. Her neighbor persuaded her to join the movement and she did not decline but her family did not know what her future would become from doing these risky ventures. Yasmine’s father had passed and it was only her, her mother and older sister. Later on Yasmin was taken to meet the leaders of the independence movement in which she hadn’t known, but for her their was a joy of excitement. ‘“ Then one day I was taken to the mountains to meet some of the leaders of the movement, she says. They were making bombs to be placed in French cafes and police stations in the capital.”’ Even as a 14 years old she wanted to take part in a bigger role and asked the FLN if she could plant a bomb somewhere and of course that’s just what she did. Everything went as planned until the timer on the bomb malfunctioned and exploded in her hands. “Two police officers were slightly injured in the blast. Yasmine, just 14, lost both her legs.” Yasmine was very influential and courageous to perform a task so threatening and treacherous and says as an older woman that she has not regret anything that had happened to her because she did something right. Later on she gets imprisoned for two years in Paris, which she is the youngest person there out of the male and females that are in prison. Before the ceasefire was signed Yasmine gets released and an American doctor had arrangements in New York for her prosthetic legs, the doctor paid for everything with his own money, an estimate of $60,000 for medical care. ‘“ I was so grateful, she says.’’’
